Heating & ventilation requirements for secondary suites are dependent on when the secondary suite was built. For suites built before 2006, you may be allowed to grandfather in a single heating system that is separated between both the primary and secondary dwelling. However for most suites two separate heating & ventilation systems are required.
Safety: To limit the possibility of a fire & smoke spreading from one unit to the other through heating ducts.
Quality of Life: Ensure occupants in both the primary and secondary dwelling have direct control over the temperature of their living space.
Several heating options are available:
- Dedicated Furnance
- Electric Baseboard Heating + HRV
- Hydronic Heating + HRV ( Provided there are separate zone controls for each unit )
